Yang Masters United Taekwondo Center (UTC) of Paola is committed to making the holistic health benefits of Taekwondo available to everyone in the community who wishes to participate. We currently offer a variety of programs for people of all ages, levels of experience, abilities, and disabilities.
Our evening programs include beginner, intermediate and advanced Taekwondo forms and fitness instruction, sparring, demonstration team, Black Belt Club and Hapkido self-defense. See class schedule. Students of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in evening classes. For those with disabilities, we use modified programs that have been developed and sanctioned by the USA Taekwondo Association for the Disabled (USATAD). We have seen great progress in ability, strength, confidence, coordination and balance being made by these uniquely-abled students. Looking to the future, our goal is to hire additional instructors to further enhance the quality of the programming and provide more even more individualized instruction.
SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAMS
Students with special needs are encouraged to join the regular evening classes and several individuals have achieved the rank of black belt. Students also regularly participate in local and regional tournaments and other special events sponsored by the school.
Some uniquely-abled students benefit more from a specialized class, and to that end, Yang Masters UTC has recently started a pilot program for persons served by the Lakemary Center, with locations in Paola and Olathe. Lakemary serves as “a resource for Kansas City families, providing choices and opportunities for persons with special needs to maximize the freedom and control they bring to their lives”. Several Lakemary students come to the YMUTC of Paola school for their own mid-day class and UTC instructors travel twice a week to offer on-site classes at the Lakemary Olathe location. See class schedule. We invite all members of the community who have special needs to consider trying the programming offered at YMUTC of Paola and experience the benefits of martial arts.
For all adults in the community, YMUTC of Paola offers a mid-day, low-impact flexibility class. See class schedule. This class is open to all (you don’t have to be a regular taekwondo student), and is a great way to stretch and relax in the middle of the day. We are looking to expand this program as well, to perhaps include other types of adult fitness classes such as kickboxing or aerobics.
At YMUTC of Paola, if a student really wants to learn, we don’t want to see them turned away for any reason. Unfortunately, finances weigh more heavily on some families than others. Financial help with student tuition, such as scholarships and payment arrangements, are available for all levels/programs and are handled on a case-by-case basis. The school is working to expand this program to offer even greater scholarship opportunities in the future – another way that we hope to bring our holistic fitness approach to more of the community.
Please feel free to contact us, or come by the school for a visit, if you are interested in any of these programs, or simply have questions.
Giving back to the local community is an important value of Yang Masters UTC of Paola. All students are encouraged to participate in regularly scheduled opportunities to serve the community. These opportunities have included providing assistance to the local homeless shelter, delivering food to low-income families during the holidays and singing Christmas carols at senior living facilities.
